The Country singer/songwriter born Jack Lebsock in Sterling, Colorado first appeared on record in 1959 with Go Ahead On b/w Just A Boy on Liberty F55190, but it failed to dent the national charts upon its release in March. He wouldn't record again for 14 years and when he did, this time with Capitol Records, the initial results were no better as For The Love Of A Woman Like That b/w Heavy On My Mind on Capitol 3579 also failed in April 1973. That changed, at least to a minor degree, in August when For Lovers Only got to # 94 b/w World That Cannot See on Capitol 3665, and the following January, Lovin' Comes Easy reached # 76 b/w I'll Be Damned If I Do (Damned If I Don't) on Capitol 3751.He would not return to the charts until early 1979, with failures in 1975 with Miss Louisiana (likely due to the inability of that label to properly promote it because this one had "hit" written all over it), in March 1976 with She Took My Words Away b/w Country Music Is A Lady on Monument 8693, and Mind Over Matter b/w The Waiting Room on Dot 17699 in May 1977. After serving as a staff writer for ABC Publishing where, among others, he did some writing for Roy Clark, and perhaps thinking a name-change might bring better luck, he changed his name legally to Jack Grayson and, billed as "Blackjack" Jack Grayson, had another very minor # 92 in April 1979 with I Ain't Never Been To Heaven (But I've Spend The Night With You) b/w Tonight I'm Feeling You (All Over Again) on Churchill 7729.By the end of 1979 he had changed labels again, but using that new billing had a # 65 in Dec 1979-Jan 1980 with a new recording of Tonight I'm Feeling You (All Over Again) b/w Free To Love on Hitbound 4501. He followed that in June 1980 with the # 70 The Stores Are Full Of Roses (B-side unclear) on Hitbound 4503, and in September with his highest hit to date, the # 59 The Devil Stands Only Five Foot Five b/w a re-release of Free To Love on Hitbound 4504.And once again, by the end of 1980 he was with yet another small label, this time Koala Records, where, now billed as Jack Grayson & Blackjack, finally broke into the Top 40 with the # 37 A Loser's Night Out b/w a re-make of The Devil Stands Only Five Foot Five on Koala 328. The follow-up Magic Eyes (# 56 in April 1981 b/w a re-release of The Stores Are Full Of Roses on Hitbound 331) and My Beginning Was You (# 45 in August b/w Hanging On By A Heartstring on Koala 334) didn't fare quite as well, but in Dec 1981-Jan 1982 he had his best ever with a cover of the 1966 Percy Sledge smash When A Man Loves A Woman, taking it to # 18 b/w A Little Tear on Koala 340.Then it was moving time again, to Joe-Wes Records where in June 1982 he had a # 38 with another re-make of Tonight I'm Feeling You (All Over Again) b/w Let's Hold Hands on Joe-Wes 81000. However in August it was back to the nether regions with the # 68 I Ain't Gonna Give Up On Her Yet b/w Mama's Secret on Joe-Wes 81006. His last charted entry then came in January 1984 with the # 77 cover of Bill Withers' Lean On Me on AMI 1318 (B-side is unclear). All his charted sides can be found here and there in used 45-rpm format and in some of his albums, of which the one covered here, released as a manufactured-on-demand CD-R in 2013, was his second, titled "When A Man Loves A Woman" (Koala KOA-15751). It originally emerged in December 1981.
